Scottish Borders & England's Lakeland

Highlights: Romantic Gretna Green, Keswick, Bowness-on-Windermere, Kirkstone Pass, Moffat, New Lanark Mills - World Heritage Site, Scottish Border Country

The romantic village of Gretna Green, just across the Scottish border, has become well known as the venue for runaway marriages over the years. The village blacksmith performed the ceremonies, and the old Blacksmith’s Shop still has an anvil in the marriage room. Because of its location, the village makes an excellent base for touring, with the Lake District National Park within an hour’s drive, and the tranquil Border Country of Sir Walter Scott, with its ancient abbeys around the River Tweed, easily reached to the north.

Lakeland Splendour

A day of spectacular touring around the lakes and mountains of the Lake District National Park, with sightseeing stops at Keswick, tourist centre for northern Lakeland, and at Bowness, the popular holiday haunt on Lake Windermere. Our circular route passes the lakes of Bassenthwaite, Thirlmere, Grasmere, Rydal Water, Ullswater and Windermere, with an opportunity to take an optional cruise on the lake before ascending Kirkstone Pass on our way back.

Mills & Moffat

A half day excursion today as we head north to New Lanark Mills - a World Heritage Site - discovering Scotland’s past amid an 18th century cotton mill beside the picturesque River Clyde. You can explore how villagers lived, learned and worked along with spectacular views across the surrounding landscape. We return via Moffat, where the Woollen Mill has a wide selection of Scottish products.

Border Country

A full day tour of beautiful Border Country visiting Melrose, where the heart of Robert the Bruce is buried in the grounds of the Abbey and on to Jedburgh, rich in the history of Mary Queen of Scots. We complete our day in Hawick, the former woollen town and famous for its rugby heritage.

Gretna Hall Hotel, Gretna Green

Located in the romantic village of Gretna Green, and dating back to 1710, Gretna Hall has long been a 'mecca' for runaway marriages.
